OpenAI is trying to make ChatGPT look less like an answer machine and more like a study partner for teenagers. Its new ChatGPT Teens features center on Study Mode, which offers guiding questions and step-by-step support instead of direct answers; educators welcome the potential for structured help, but remain divided over cheating, accuracy, and whether the claimed learning benefits can be demonstrated.
The interaction OpenAI is trying to change
OpenAI describes ChatGPT Teens as a product meant to help teens learn, think critically, deepen understanding, and use AI confidently. Its central mechanism is Study Mode: rather than simply supply a completed response to a homework or study request, the chatbot is meant to guide a student through questions and steps.
That distinction targets a familiar classroom tension. A chatbot can be used as an educational supplement, but it can also become a shortcut around an assignment. The new feature changes the proposed interaction with the model; it does not settle how students will use it or how schools will assess work completed with AI assistance.
Teachers are already building around the tool
Casto, a Massachusetts high school chemistry teacher, has already incorporated Google’s Gemini into classwork to generate feasible research-project topics. He said responses often need revision and further investigation and validation, but found the tool useful for overcoming the initial problem of finding workable topics.
Where educators in the discussion see a role for AI
- Adapting a lesson plan written for high school students to be more accessible to seventh- or eighth-grade students.
- Updating rubrics and other administrative work, which Love said could leave teachers more time for student relationships.
- Generating starting ideas for authentic student research projects, with teacher and student review of the chatbot’s output.
Rothschild’s experience points toward a different response: make more of the learning process visible. She has shifted toward in-class exercises and multiple draft iterations after seeing AI-generated work appear in essays, homework, and online discussion exchanges. For her, the concern is not merely whether an answer is correct, but whether submitted work shows a student’s own thinking.
Adoption is ahead of proof
The audience is already large. A February Pew Research Center report cited in the discussion found that more than half of surveyed teens use AI for schoolwork. An Instructure survey cited in the same account found that 90% of higher-education students use AI at least occasionally to complete assignments. Those figures make classroom policy a live issue, not a future-planning exercise.
The unresolved question is whether a guided interface produces better educational outcomes than a direct-answer chatbot. Annika Marie Schone, a Northeastern professor and AI health-safety researcher, said claims that these tools improve critical thinking cannot yet be independently verified and that the outcomes of the interventions are unknown. She also pointed to an absence of regulations and reporting requirements for AI companies.
ChatGPT Teens therefore arrives with a clearer product theory than a resolved education debate. Study Mode offers a specific alternative to handing students answers, while teachers are still deciding what kinds of AI assistance belong in their classrooms and what evidence should be required before they trust the learning claims.
