Outer Biosciences is trying to turn skin changes that take weeks to emerge into a faster ingredient-discovery process. Its core decision is to use de-identified human skin discarded after surgery, keep it viable for up to a month, and test chemicals selected by an AI model.
From a short test window to a longer readout
Founded in 2022 and led by Michael Polansky, Outer says it obtains de-identified tissue through biobanks and brokers, including the National Disease Research Interchange and the Cooperative Human Tissue Network. The startup says its proprietary support system extends tissue viability from an industry norm of days to as long as a month.
That extra time is central to the company’s screening pitch. Tissue kept viable for days can be used for acute-toxicity testing, while collagen remodeling, pigmentation change, and barrier repair can take weeks to unfold. Outer is therefore looking for chemicals that affect specific skin functions, rather than treating the tissue system as a simple immediate-harm screen.
The output is meant to be an ingredient
Outer says the AI-assisted process now generates a new candidate roughly every six weeks. It has six active leads and several dozen additional hits, according to the company. Rather than launch a consumer brand, Outer plans to license or sell finished ingredients to beauty or pharmaceutical companies that can formulate and commercialize them.
What a lead still needs

Outer’s focus is cosmetic-ingredient discovery in skin, where the claimed advantage is the ability to watch slower skin-specific processes in donated tissue. Vivodyne has announced nearly $80 million in funding, including a $38 million seed round and a $40 million Series A led by Khosla Ventures.
