Pixel Watch 5 is now on store shelves, and Google’s new smartwatch is designed to do more than answer questions. It can take limited action while offline—and, in Europe at launch, it can call emergency services after detecting a serious breathing event when the wearer is unresponsive. The watch went on sale August 20, following its August 12 announcement and preorder period. The 41-millimeter model costs $399, while the 45-millimeter version is $429. Google rates battery life at up to 30 hours for the smaller watch and 40 hours for the larger one. The breathing system combines an optical PPG sensor, an accelerometer, a barometer, and on-device AI to look for severe, persistent drops in oxygen saturation. If the wearer doesn’t respond, the watch can place an emergency call and share their location. Google says those drops can be associated with events including choking, severe pneumonia, or drug-toxicity accidents—but the emergency feature’s initial availability is limited to Europe. Gemini adds the more proactive assistant layer. It can use calendar or travel context, surface a boarding pass or a family dinner, and offer one-tap actions. With Raise to Talk, users can start a workout, set a timer, or search Gmail for restaurant reservations, even without a connection. Google also claims twice-as-accurate GPS tracking and 15-percent better sleep-stage detection. But Health Guardian summaries and on-wrist Strength Training guidance are still listed as coming soon, with no specific release date.

Story brief

3 key points

Google has moved the Pixel Watch 5 from preorder to retail, positioning it as a wearable assistant that can act with limited connectivity rather than merely answer prompts. On-device Gemini actions support offline use, while a new breathing-emergency system can contact responders if severe oxygen decline is detected and the wearer is unresponsive—but that capability initially launches only in Europe. The $399–$429...

  1. 01

General availability began August 20 after the August 12 announcement; pricing is $399 for 41mm and $429 for 45mm.

  2. 02

Breathing alerts combine PPG, accelerometer, barometer and on-device AI; emergency calling is Europe-only at launch.

  3. 03

Gemini can surface calendar or travel context and complete actions offline, including workouts, timers and Gmail restaurant searches.

Google says Pixel Watch 5 is now on shelves through the Google Store and retail partners. Its central AI-and-safety pitch combines context-aware Gemini help with breathing emergency detection that can contact emergency services when it detects a severe event and the wearer is unresponsive.

The retail milestone follows Google’s August 12 introduction, when pre-orders began and the company set August 20 for general availability. The 41mm watch starts at $399 and the 45mm version at $429; Google also lists a $579 Stephen Curry Special Edition. Google rates battery life at up to 30 hours for the smaller model and 40 hours for the larger one.

Sensors, AI and an emergency call

The most consequential new feature is the breathing alert. Google says the watch combines an optical PPG sensor, accelerometer, barometer and on-device AI to monitor for severe, persistent drops in oxygen saturation. If it identifies a breathing emergency and the wearer does not respond, it can call emergency services and send the wearer’s location.

Google says severe oxygen-saturation drops can result from drug-toxicity accidents, severe pneumonia or choking. The feature launches first in Europe, making its emergency-response promise geographically limited at the outset.

Gemini is designed to act before a request

At a Glance puts context-aware updates on the watch face, such as a boarding pass at the airport or remaining stops on a commute. Raise to Talk lets users lift their wrist to ask Gemini to start a workout, set a timer or find dinner reservations in Gmail. Google says core actions process on-device with low latency, including when offline.

Google also says Proactive Suggestions can find information such as a family dinner in a calendar and present it as a one-tap action. A double-pinch gesture can select, confirm and send a suggestion, shifting the watch’s assistant from answering requests toward surfacing and completing small tasks.

Other Google-stated upgrades

  • Google says GPS route tracking is twice as accurate as prior Pixel Watch generations in challenging environments, using 3D building models, AI-driven optimization and real-time atmospheric corrections.
  • Google says sleep-stage detection is 15% more accurate. Smart Wake monitors heart rate and movement in the 30 minutes before an alarm to seek a lighter-sleep moment.

The health roadmap remains partly unfinished

Google plans monthly Health Guardian summaries for blood-pressure trends, sleep-breathing quality and insulin-resistance trends. It says the first detailed summary arrives after one month of wear, but describes the features as rolling out soon without naming a date. Google says the models behind them were trained on billions of minutes of sensor data from opted-in users and validated against clinical measurements.

The company also says Google Health Coach creates customized strength workouts, while a separate on-wrist Strength Training experience with step-by-step guidance is coming soon. That leaves the retail product with its assistant and emergency system available now, but part of its preventive-health and workout-guidance pitch still dependent on later releases.
