The proposed mid-2030s plant pairs Realta’s early power-conversion work with utility help on siting, permits, interconnection and financing—steps that can advance a future project before construction begins.

Realta Fusion’s Wisconsin project has moved from a technical demonstration toward utility-backed development: MGE Energy invested in the startup, while Madison Gas and Electric will support engineering, siting, permitting, grid interconnection, equipment and financing for a potential 200-MWe plant. The target is the mid-2030s, with no disclosed investment amount, so this is not a construction or generation milestone.
The proposed facility would generate 200 megawatts-electric, but its construction date remains only a mid-2030s target.
MGE’s support covers equipment, engineering, siting, permitting, interconnection and financing—not a completed plant commitment.
WHAM demonstrated direct energy conversion, but most converted energy came from plasma-heating power rather than fusion-born power.
Realta Fusion is exploring a 200-megawatt fusion power plant in Wisconsin with Madison Gas and Electric, bringing a utility’s capital and development support behind a project targeted for the mid-2030s. MGE Energy made a direct equity investment in the Madison startup during the partnership’s first phase.
The companies will explore joint development of the 200-megawatt-electric facility. The investment amount was not disclosed, and the proposed plant could be built sometime in the mid-2030s. That makes the partnership an early project-development step, rather than a completed power plant.
Realta is developing magnetic-mirror fusion. In June, the company and the University of Wisconsin–Madison said they demonstrated direct energy conversion on the WHAM prototype. The technique converts kinetic energy from moving charged plasma particles into electrical current, instead of sending all energy through a heat-driven turbine cycle.
Realta said the prototype produced enough current to light several bulbs. It also said most of the converted energy came from power used to heat and sustain its deuterium plasma, not fusion-born power. Its stated next goal is to scale the converter to multi-kilowatt and ultimately multi-megawatt capability.
MGE has agreed to provide equipment, engineering and technical support, plus assistance with siting, permitting, interconnection and financing. Those commitments cover the practical path from a fusion design to a proposed facility that can be located and connected to the grid. Realta is also planning its Realta Forge research-and-development facility at Madison’s former Oscar Mayer site.
Realta joins a small group of fusion startups with utility-linked projects. Commonwealth Fusion Systems is leasing land from Dominion Energy for its planned 400-megawatt Arc plant near Richmond, Virginia. Google and Eni have agreed to buy electricity from Arc, which is expected to come online in the early 2030s.
Helion is working with Chelan County Public Utility District on a planned 50-megawatt Washington facility intended to supply Microsoft. Type One Energy is planning a 350-megawatt plant at a former coal site near Oak Ridge, Tennessee, through a deal with the Tennessee Valley Authority. Each arrangement connects a future fusion project to utility infrastructure well before electricity generation.
