Realta Fusion is exploring a 200-megawatt fusion power plant in Wisconsin with Madison Gas and Electric, bringing a utility’s capital and development support behind a project targeted for the mid-2030s. A small electricity demonstration

A utility partner handles work beyond the device

MGE has agreed to provide equipment, engineering and technical support, plus assistance with siting, permitting, interconnection and financing. Those commitments cover the practical path from a fusion design to a proposed facility that can be located and connected to the grid. Realta is also planning its Realta Forge research-and-development facility at Madison’s former Oscar Mayer site.

Other fusion developers are lining up utility sites

Realta joins a small group of fusion startups with utility-linked projects. Commonwealth Fusion Systems is leasing land from Dominion Energy for its planned 400-megawatt Arc plant near Richmond, Virginia. Google and Eni have agreed to buy electricity from Arc, which is expected to come online in the early 2030s.

Helion is working with Chelan County Public Utility District on a planned 50-megawatt Washington facility intended to supply Microsoft. Type One Energy is planning a 350-megawatt plant at a former coal site near Oak Ridge, Tennessee, through a deal with the Tennessee Valley Authority. Each arrangement connects a future fusion project to utility infrastructure well before electricity generation.
