Humanoid robots performed drunken boxing and front flips for families at a public robot carnival on Shanghai’s outskirts. Elsewhere at the event, children guided a four-legged robot up stairs, remote-controlled machines staged a water-bead duel, and a mini robotic dog became a holiday purchase. The result was a close-up public display of robots as entertainment as well as potential tools for physical work.
The event took place during a public holiday at a robotics research-and-development center, where families moved between demonstrations and retail-style attractions. The mini dog was not simply on display: an 11-year-old attendee was showing off one his mother had bought as a gift.
Spectacle and utility under one roof
The carnival featured humanoids, quadrupedal robots, robotic arms, robotic lions, combat robots and toy robots. Its activities were mostly for show: after the humanoid performances, the audience chanted for more.
But the venue houses more than 100 companies that research, develop, manufacture and market robotics equipment. Some make specialized machines for tasks such as transporting heavy loads and inspecting sewage pipes, giving the crowd-facing demonstrations a practical industrial backdrop.
That contrast is central to the event’s pitch. A robot designed for a narrow setting can be built around a specific job, while a humanoid is being presented as a more general physical assistant and as a public performer. The carnival supplied examples of both, without resolving which form will prove more useful across everyday work.
MIT Technology Review reports that nearly 90% of more than 13,000 two-armed, two-legged robots delivered globally last year were made in China.
Scale does not settle the shape question
China’s latest five-year plan makes embodied AI—embedding AI in physical systems—a key part of bringing AI into daily life. The reported delivery share signals manufacturing scale, but it does not settle whether a human-shaped robot is the best design for a job; some roboticists remain skeptical.
The disagreement is not only about appearance. Humanoids face safety challenges related to their weight and need to balance on two legs. High prices and short battery life have also limited their appeal. Those constraints distinguish a crowd-pleasing front flip from a machine designed around a narrower task.
A performance can demonstrate mobility and balance, but it does not answer how long a machine can operate, what it costs to deploy, or how safely it works around people. Those are the practical tests separating a public attraction from the broader daily-life ambition identified in the plan.
Coffee, laundry and a public campaign
DexForce exhibited a humanoid that can make coffee, while robotic arms attempted to fold a basket of T-shirts. DexForce product manager Yang Duan said humanoids can free people from physical work and mundane chores. The demonstrations made that ambition concrete, even as the event remained primarily a public showcase.
The coffee and laundry displays point toward domestic or service work, whereas the center’s other companies build machines for industrial inspection and load-moving. That is a meaningful product contrast: the humanoid demonstrations argue for versatility, while the specialized systems are associated with clearly defined tasks.
Shanghai is part of a broader push to put humanoids in front of the public. Shopping malls and tourist attractions in several Chinese cities have hosted performances, while bipedal robots have run half-marathons in Beijing. For now, the carnival’s clearest achievement is making those machines familiar before their everyday role is established.
