Shipt has brought its prompt-to-cart shopping assistant into its own app and website, letting customers start with a meal plan, event, budget, recipe, or dish photo instead of a product search. Ask Shipt can use store promotions and generate a retailer-specific cart, but shoppers must verify every recommendation before checkout. The launch extends Shipt’s recent ChatGPT and Claude integrations while intensifying competition with Instacart, Uber Eats, and DoorDash.

Inputs include natural-language requests, recipes, budgets, and photos of dishes whose ingredients can be identified.
One example is a weeknight meal for a family of five costing less than $35.
Shipt has launched Ask Shipt, an AI shopping assistant that turns a meal idea, event plan, budget request or food photo into a ready-to-buy cart. The feature promises to move shopping beyond item-by-item search, but Shipt says customers remain responsible for reviewing, swapping or editing every recommendation before checkout.
Available now in the Shipt app and on Shipt.com, the tool appears beneath the search bar after a shopper selects a retailer from Shipt’s Marketplace. Users can enter a prompt, upload a recipe or share a photo of a meal; Shipt says the assistant then generates a personalized cart.
Ask Shipt is built for requests that start with a need rather than a product name. Shipt’s examples include planning food for a tailgate, assembling school lunches and after-school snacks, or finding a weeknight meal for a family of five under $35. Shoppers can also ask about current store sales and weekend promotions.
The photo feature changes the starting point for a delivery order. A shopper can upload an image of a dish seen online or at a restaurant, and Shipt says Ask Shipt will identify its ingredients and add them to the cart. The interaction is meant to carry visual inspiration into a concrete retailer-shopping task.
Ask Shipt follows Shipt’s August launch of shopping experiences in ChatGPT and Claude, which also let people describe needs in natural language and build a Shipt cart. The difference is where the interaction begins: Ask Shipt places the same broad planning-to-cart idea inside Shipt’s own app and website.
Shipt is joining a delivery-app field where Instacart, Uber Eats and DoorDash have also introduced AI shopping assistants this year, according to TechCrunch. The practical question is whether a generated cart makes household planning simpler, or shifts the familiar choices about products, preferences and price into the final review.
