The technology is scaling highlights, analysis and niche programming, but audience comfort with synthetic narration remains a constraint on its most visible uses.

Sports broadcasters are expanding AI from analytics into personalized recaps, animation, live segments and synthetic voices, but audience acceptance is uneven. ESPN says AI enables daily coverage across more than 100 contests, while the U.S. Open uses it to help five editors recap 254 matches. Yet IBM found trust in AI sports content fell from 63% to 59% as reported use rose to 69%.
ESPN’s SportsCenter for You plans an always-on service after using AI voices for personalized recaps during its first year.
The U.S. Open’s five-person editorial team uses AI to cover 254 matches, including periods with 17 simultaneous matches.
NBA production workflows cut cartoon-show development from weeks or months to one or two days with AI assistance.
AI is moving from the control room into sports programming itself: it can flag an expected blitz, create live visual segments, narrate personalized recaps and revive a familiar voice. The common promise is more coverage for more fans; the unsettled question is how much of the viewing experience audiences will accept from a machine.
Amazon Prime Video uses a Thursday Night Football algorithm to identify defenders most likely to blitz before the snap. Telemundo also used AI-generated segments in its World Cup coverage through a HeyGen partnership supported by CAA, described as the startup’s first major live-broadcast partnership.
ESPN has spent about a year using AI-generated voices tuned to resemble its anchors for SportsCenter for You, a personalized recap service. Each morning, it can compile clips from a user’s preferred teams and local school sports—coverage its anchors could not individually produce across more than 100 daily contests. ESPN plans to turn it into an always-on, continuously updated product after its first year.
The NBA’s youth-focused YouTube show uses AI-assisted cartoon characters, but starts with human voice actors and uses AI to speed scripting, narration and animation. NBA executive Bob Carney said a process that once took weeks or months can now be completed in a day or two.
The production case can be less visible. IBM first added AI voiceover to Masters and Wimbledon highlight packages in 2023, then shifted its work toward searchable historical footage and in-game analytics. At the U.S. Open, AI helps a five-person USTA editorial staff produce recaps for all 254 matches, including stretches with up to 17 matches underway at once.
NBC has taken a more intimate route, restoring deceased NBA narrator Jim Fagan’s voice for coverage elements in partnership with his family. At the same time, ElevenLabs offers more than 10,000 voices, including fabricated sportscasters and a John Madden-esque option. That makes authorized restoration only one part of a wider synthetic-voice market.
NASCAR’s 2025 Mexico City race put the trade-off in direct view. It used AI for live Spanish-language coverage, and the technology worked as expected. But chief brand officer Tim Clark said that, with hindsight, he would have made a different choice: a disconnected automated voice was not right for NASCAR’s fans. NASCAR continues to use algorithms away from the cameras.
