Stability AI is promising creative AI tools for music, gaming and entertainment. Its latest financing gives that ambition a $76 million boost from Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, Sony Music Group, Electronic Arts and investment firms including AMD Ventures and Pacific Alliance Ventures.
The Series B brings Stability AI’s stated total funding to $232 million, including two equity rounds and convertible notes. Coatue, Greycroft, Kadmos Capital, Sean Parker and Eric Schmidt also participated after investing in the company’s previous round.
Capital and creative control
The roster is more than a conventional venture-capital list. The financing follows agreements with Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group and EA to build AI models using the companies’ catalogues and intellectual property. Those arrangements put two music companies and a game publisher on both sides of Stability AI’s push into creative workflows: as investors and as development partners.
The relationship-building predates this financing. Stability AI partnered with Universal Music and EA last October, then Warner Music last November, with each company participating in co-developing tools rather than merely licensing generated output. The new investment extends that arrangement from commercial collaboration into the company’s capital base.
A wider product mandate
Stability AI says it will use the capital to develop its creative-production product suite, deepen applied research and expand its professional-services arm. The company develops models for image, video and music generation, including Stable Diffusion, so the plan reaches beyond a single format or model release.
The company recently introduced Stable Audio 3.0, open-weight music models that it says were trained on fully licensed data. Artists can access them through a digital audio workstation plugin or StableAudio.com, according to Stability AI. The release is a concrete example of the licensed-data approach the company is presenting to creative industries.
Who joined the round
- Music: Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group and Warner Music Group are named investors.
- Gaming: Electronic Arts is a named investor and has an agreement with Stability AI to build models using its intellectual property.
- Technology and finance: AMD Ventures and Pacific Alliance Ventures also participated.
The legal and leadership backdrop
The company enters its next product phase with one copyright case largely resolved in its favor in the United Kingdom. Getty Images had accused Stability AI of infringing its intellectual property by using Getty images to train an image-generation model; a similar Getty lawsuit in the United States remains before the courts.
Prem Akkaraju became chief executive in June 2024. Coatue co-founder Thomas Laffont has now joined Stability AI’s board, adding a board-level change to a round that combines returning financial backers with entertainment investors. Whether the investment relationships produce durable creative-production products, research and services remains the company’s execution test.
