Tesla is building anticipation for an invitation-only Cybercab event in Austin with posts emphasizing that its robotaxi has “no steering wheel, no pedals.” The vehicle is designed for driverless travel, but Tesla has not disclosed the scope of the planned rollout—leaving the event to answer whether the Cybercab is entering public service at meaningful scale or merely becoming the next stage of a limited pilot.
Tesla posted “try it out” alongside the Austin messaging, while Elon Musk pinned a post promising “a storm of Cybercabs.” The company first showed the Cybercab design in October 2024; its return to the spotlight now comes as investors and rivals measure driverless services by where they operate, how many vehicles are available and whether riders can actually use them.
A purpose-built car is not yet a service
Tesla describes the Cybercab as a purpose-built, driverless two-seater with butterfly doors and no steering wheel or pedals. It has been testing a version with human drivers and conventional controls in multiple U.S. markets, a distinction that separates development testing from a vehicle operating without anyone aboard.
The design is also an economic bet. Tesla made the Cybercab smaller and lighter than its other vehicles and gave it a lower-capacity battery pack, aiming to reduce manufacturing costs. Lower upfront vehicle cost could improve the economics of a robotaxi network, but it does not establish that the network can drive safely and reliably across a large operating area.

The Austin baseline remains limited
Tesla’s existing Austin Robotaxi pilot began with modified Model Y SUVs. Initially, an employee sat in the front seat and could intervene if needed. Tesla later expanded that Model Y-based system to additional cities in Texas and Florida, while its robotaxi operations have remained within geofenced areas—mapped operating zones set by the company.
That limitation matters because Tesla’s consumer Full Self-Driving (Supervised) product is still driver-assistance software: the driver retains responsibility and liability. A Cybercab operating with no steering wheel or pedals would need to carry the driving task itself, rather than asking an occupant to take over.
Scale will be judged against an established rival
A Tesla Robotaxi tracker estimated that slightly more than 200 Tesla vehicles in the U.S. fleet were registered as unsupervised, with permitted trips reported in six cities across Texas and Florida. Texas records offer a more specific snapshot: 45 Cybercabs were authorized for driverless operations in the state. Both figures describe authorized or registered fleets, not a disclosed count of vehicles carrying paying riders at the Austin event.
Waymo, by comparison, operates a commercial robotaxi service in 14 U.S. cities with about 4,000 driverless vehicles on U.S. roads. The contrast does not decide whether Tesla’s lower-cost vehicle can scale, but it makes the Austin disclosure more consequential: Tesla must show not simply that a Cybercab can move without a driver, but what operating footprint it can sustain.
Safety and access are the immediate tests
Tesla has reported a few dozen incidents in its Austin pilot. Most were minor crashes with stationary objects, and some involved teleoperators remotely moving vehicles at low speeds. Separately, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has at least two ongoing investigations into possible safety defects involving Tesla’s partially automated driving systems.
The unresolved issue for Thursday is concrete: Tesla has promoted the Cybercab’s absence of manual controls, but has not specified how many vehicles will operate, where riders can travel, or how public access will work. Those details will determine whether the event changes the company’s robotaxi position or extends its carefully bounded deployment.
