Three Hikers Rescued on Mount Shasta After Relying on Google Gemini

Three novice hikers were rescued from Mount Shasta after a climb planned with help from Google’s Gemini ended with an off-route nighttime descent, an injured hiker and an overnight stay in Mud Creek Canyon. The hikers told a sheriff’s deputy they had relied heavily on the chatbot for route and packing guidance.

The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office said Gemini advised the group to bring substantially less food and water than required, particularly after what was planned as an eight-hour ascent became a multiday ordeal. Separately, the hikers reached the summit at about 7 p.m., well beyond the recommended noon turnaround time, then began descending in darkness.

A supply failure and a late descent

The group, from Roseville, camped at roughly 8,400 feet and left with day packs at 3 a.m. for the Clear Creek Route. About an hour into the descent, they called sheriff’s dispatch for directions, wandered into Mud Creek Canyon, and one hiker injured his knee in a fall.

The hikers made a small encampment with little to no shelter in the steep drainage and remained there until the following morning. U.S. Forest Service climbing rangers provided medical aid, and Siskiyou County search-and-rescue volunteers helped guide the group back to the trailhead without incident.

The route still demands independent judgment

Officials described Clear Creek as a nontechnical mountaineering route that nevertheless requires fitness and preparation for injury, bad weather or an unplanned overnight stay. They warned that hikers who get lost can enter more dangerous terrain, including the Mud Creek drainage, where serious accidents and fatalities have occurred.

The contrast is central to the rescue: officials attributed inadequate food and water advice to Gemini, while their account also documents a late summit, a descent after dark and a navigation error. AI-generated planning information did not remove the need to reassess conditions and route choices on the mountain.

Safeguards officials emphasized

• Consult Mount Shasta rangers before the trip for current information.
• Follow the noon turnaround rule to preserve daylight for descent.
• Use multiple navigation methods and regularly verify the route instead of relying on AI or electronic devices alone.
