Tiangong Ultra Runs 100 Meters in 8.86 Seconds, While Safe Stopping Remains Unresolved
The Beijing competition made athletic progress visible, but its practical events point to the work still needed on deceleration, dexterity and autonomous operation before broader deployment.

Humanoid robots are now posting sprint times beyond the human world record. Beijing’s World Humanoid Robot Games also exposed the nearer test for machines meant to work around people and objects: stopping safely at speed, handling small items, and completing tasks without remote control.
The second World Humanoid Robot Games ended in Beijing on August 26, after opening on August 22. Organizers said more than 600 teams brought over 2,000 robots, including participants from China and 15 other countries. The program spanned 51 disciplines, adding tennis, table tennis and kickboxing this year alongside industrial, logistics and hospitality trials.
A record sprint, then the hard part: coming to rest
Tiangong Ultra, developed by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, ran 100 meters in 8.86 seconds and won the long jump with 7.97 meters. That sprint is faster than Usain Bolt’s 9.58-second human record. Honor’s Lightning was listed at 9.47 seconds, although an accompanying caption cited a 9.32-second pre-event test.
Speed does not settle the control problem. A Unitree humanoid reportedly traveling 28.3 mph failed to brake, veered off the track and hit trackside barriers. Safe deceleration requires dissipating energy, rebalancing and making rapid transitions between physical states; it remains an unresolved engineering challenge.
The commercial tests ask for different skills
- Plugging cables into sockets and placing garbage in a trash can tested task execution in a built environment.
- Block building and tweezer bean picking tested fine manipulation relevant to factory, warehouse and retail automation.
Those slower tasks are difficult because small-object handling must contend with unpredictable friction and slippage. Galbot entered a supermarket shelf-stocking competition and demonstrated a robot autonomously playing tennis against a human, a task requiring perception and fast reactions.
Autonomy remains a material qualifier
Some event footage appeared to show people remotely operating robots, so not every demonstration was autonomous. One engineer attributed part of the progress to improved networking and better access to cloud AI processing. The competition’s clearest result is not that one capability has been solved, but that running, safe control, dexterity and autonomy remain separate tests.
