Tiangong Ultra, a humanoid robot from the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, ran 100 metres in 8.86 seconds in a large-size division semifinal at Beijing’s World Humanoid Robot Games. The time is more than seven-tenths of a second faster than Usain Bolt’s 9.58-second men’s human world record.
It was Tiangong Ultra’s second major improvement at the event. Its 8.86-second semifinal time lowered a 9.39-second mark set on opening day. The robot had won the inaugural games’ 100-metre race the prior year in 21.50 seconds, making the latest result a dramatic change in the event’s own benchmark.
Speed arrived before a graceful stop
The run also showed the physical tradeoff behind the headline time. Tiangong Ultra stopped by striking a thick mat beyond the finish line, then collapsed. A small fire appeared in its torso after the impact. In the other semifinal, another robot disassembled during the race.
More records, all from the builder
The Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center said earlier Tuesday that its Tiangong robots had beaten four human world records. Alongside the 100 metres, it cited results for 400 metres, 1,500 metres and the high jump. Those additional performance figures are company-supplied claims, rather than independently detailed race results in the event account.
The Center’s stated additional marks
- 400 metres: 38.15 seconds.
- 1,500 metres: 2 minutes 21.64 seconds.
- High jump: 2.88 metres.
The distinction matters because the clean sprint number and the messy finish describe different parts of a humanoid system. Tiangong’s result demonstrates fast powered running under this competition’s setup. The collision, fire and mid-race disassembly show that completing a run at speed was not the only engineering test on the track.
A crowded Beijing test ground
The sprint is one of 51 contests at the second World Humanoid Robot Games, which has drawn more than 2,000 robots from 666 teams. The program also includes football, dancing and industrial-task contests, placing sprinting alongside tests of other kinds of movement and work.
The Center has backing linked to state-owned enterprises, investment funds, Baidu and Xiaomi’s robotics unit, according to Qichacha corporate data cited in the event account. China has designated humanoid robots a strategic emerging industry as companies and policymakers pursue manufacturing, logistics and service uses for advances in AI, motors and sensors. The next useful measure will be whether the performance gains visible in a short race translate into reliable finishes and the wider event tasks now being staged in Beijing.
