Tolan has raised $30 million for an AI companion that combines personal support with help managing daily life. Union Square Ventures announced the financing on October 19, 2026. The firm is betting on a product people return to for companionship—and increasingly use to organize tasks, groceries and family plans.
A new lead investor, an undisclosed valuation
USV is leading the round alongside existing investor Khosla Ventures. Homebrew also participated, TechCrunch reported, citing Upstarts Media. The new investment doubles the amount Tolan has raised, bringing its total funding to roughly $60 million.
The startup has not disclosed its new valuation. TechCrunch reported that it exceeds Tolan’s previous $120 million valuation, while PitchBook estimates the new figure at more than $268 million with “medium confidence.” That estimate is not a company-confirmed price for the transaction.
The subscription business behind the companion
People interact with Tolan through a cartoon-like character in its app. The companion is designed to help users work through emotions and relationships, manage daily life and pursue goals. Support and to-do lists sit within the same experience, rather than being described as separate products.
Tolan makes money through tiered memberships, with a subscription required for full access to its features. The company told Upstarts Media that its annual recurring revenue is now in the “double-digit millions,” according to TechCrunch.
USV says more than 250,000 people will spend time with Tolan this month, a forward-looking monthly figure. TechCrunch describes the company as claiming more than 250,000 active users.
USV also says users have held more than 70 million conversations with their Tolans over the past year. That measures conversation volume across the product, not the number of distinct customers.
The friend is becoming an assistant without losing what made people care about it in the first place.

From personal support to family logistics
Tolan’s disclosed audience helps explain the household focus. Its team told Upstarts Media that about 70% of users are women and 40% are parents, TechCrunch reported.
Mignano traces USV’s investment thesis to its first meetings with Tolan’s founders. The firm wondered whether the relationships people formed with their companions could support a larger business. Months later, he writes, users were turning to Tolan to buy groceries, plan children’s birthday parties and coordinate family life.
Those examples are an investor’s account of customer behavior, not a detailed specification of what Tolan completes on its own.
