A private dinner before a larger meeting
Trump had a private dinner with Amodei on Sunday. Ahead of it, Trump said AI regulation would be part of their discussion. CNBC reported, citing a person familiar with the visit, that it was their first one-on-one meeting. What they discussed at dinner has not been disclosed.
Trump has opposed slowing AI development and has called some fears about the technology a “hoax.” Amodei has called for limits on how quickly advanced AI is developed to manage potential risks. Tuesday’s meeting will put that disagreement before a larger group.
Monday’s guest list takes shape
The meeting is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in the White House East Room. Amodei, OpenAI President Greg Brockman, Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Palantir CEO Alex Karp are expected, CBS News reported. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Huang are also expected. Company spokespeople confirmed Brockman, Pichai and Karp’s plans to CBS; sources familiar with the plans supplied its accounts of Amodei, Zuckerberg and Huang.
Executives at OpenAI have also called for limits on development speed. Huang, by contrast, has argued that warnings about AI risks are overstated and that guardrails could weaken the U.S. position against China. The guest list gives executives with competing views a chance to make their case directly to Trump and Johnson.
Johnson described the meeting’s purpose on Monday as finding the “right balance” between regulation and innovation. In a Fox Business interview quoted by CBS News, he warned against smothering AI with red tape, calling that approach dangerous to national security. He presented the meeting as a step toward finding a balance, not as the unveiling of a rule.
