Unitree’s $4,017 Go2 Pro Makes Robot Dogs Cheaper, Not Yet Everyday Tools
A real-world Go2 Pro outing captures both sides of Unitree’s proposition: legged robots now cost far less, but heat, battery life, durability and a clear job still constrain them.

A Unitree Go2 Pro bought for $4,017, including tariffs and shipping, made a two-mile downhill trip to an office with battery to spare. On the uphill return, it collapsed near home with 5% battery remaining and an internal temperature of 84°C. The episode captures the tension behind cheaper legged robots: conspicuous mobility is now accessible to more buyers, while dependable everyday work remains unsettled.
The cause of the collapse was uncertain: it may have run out of power, overheated, or both. The Go2 Pro has no arms or hands, which limits household use. Quadrupeds are used in academic research and sometimes entertainment, but wheeled robots are faster and more energy-efficient for deliveries, while drones suit much surveying and inspection work.
Unitree launched the Go2 Air at $1,600.

A simpler machine lowers the bill
The Go2 uses 12 motors, three on each leg, with the same motor arrangement repeated across the machine. Reusing parts reduces component count, and the leg design is meant to allow field replacement rather than a full-machine repair.
Unitree also combines relatively powerful motors with a 6.33-to-1 gearbox. Two cited Boston Dynamics Spot leg motors use 51-to-1 reduction ratios. Lower-ratio gearing can reduce the cost and rigidity of an actuator, the motor-and-gear assembly that moves a joint, while software makes frequent control corrections.
The affordability trade-off
- The Go2 Air is described as more than 97% cheaper than Spot, which starts around $75,000, though Spot is larger and carries heavier payloads.

Quadrupeds lead to humanoids
Unitree introduced the H1 humanoid in 2023 and the G1 the following year. The consumer G1 starts at $13,500, while a research-grade EDU version costs about $50,000. The cheapest G1 has 23 motors: five in each arm, six in each leg and one in its torso.
Unitree debuted on the Shanghai stock market on August 19, and its shares rose more than fivefold on the first trading day. At the cited Monday close, the company was valued at $34 billion, more than triple its valuation before the IPO.
Unitree has pushed a quadruped into a price range unavailable to many buyers of larger, higher-payload systems. The remaining test is whether durability and a concrete use case can catch up with that lower price.
