Research investigation R1024 / comparison
Claude Code’s documented task cancellation does not guarantee a remote job stops
The sampled documentation separates client interaction, protocol task state and backend execution. Cancelling a call, acknowledging cancellation or ending a session does not establish that delegated remote work has terminated.
Bounded sample: five listed documents covering ordinary main-conversation MCP calls, native MCP Tasks, local stdio servers and Upstash dispatchers. The comparison does not establish behavior for every MCP client, server or delegated backend.

How to read this report
- 01Synthesize the five supplied evidence records: Anthropic’s Claude Code MCP reference, the MCP Tasks specification, the MCP cancellation specification, Upstash’s toolkit documentation and its October 23 implementation walkthrough. Recovery of saved evidence is not a new collection or experiment.
- 02Preserve the requested evidence cutoff of 2026-10-24T20:31:03.550Z. The supplied snapshots were retrieved at 20:32:14.364Z, after that cutoff; they are not immutable historical captures establishing the documentation’s exact cutoff-time contents.
- 03Build an evidence_matrix separating ordinary backgrounded requests, native MCP Tasks, local stdio processes and Upstash dispatchers. For each control, record the documented client outcome, protocol or record outcome, backend guarantee and recovery conditions.
- 04Classify promises at the layer they actually govern. Keep explicit guarantees, conditional behavior and unspecified outcomes distinct; do not convert documentation into observed runtime behavior or treat missing documentation as proof of absence.
