OpenAI forms team to study ‘catastrophic’ AI risks, including nuclear threats

OpenAI has formed a new team called "Preparedness," led by Aleksander Madry, to assess, evaluate, and mitigate risks associated with AI systems. The team's responsibilities include forecasting and protecting against various dangers, ranging from AI's persuasive abilities to its potential for generating malicious code.

Goal: a quantitative, evidence-based methodology, beyond what is accepted as possible:

Some areas of study include "chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear" threats related to AI. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has been vocal about the potential risks of AI and this move appears to be a concrete step towards addressing those concerns. The Preparedness team is also soliciting ideas for risk studies from the community, offering a $25,000 prize and a job opportunity for the top submissions. The team will work on creating a "risk-informed development policy" to guide OpenAI's approach to AI safety, focusing on both pre and post-model deployment phases. This announcement comes as OpenAI increasingly focuses on the safety aspects of AI, especially forms of AI that could exceed human intelligence.
