Albertsons Brings Safeway Grocery Shopping Into ChatGPT Through OpenAI Partnership
Shoppers can turn a recipe, photo or request into a grocery cart. The partnership also covers employee tools and merchandising recommendations, with more grocery brands planned.
Announced October 1, the expanded Albertsons–OpenAI partnership adds AI support for retail teams and merchants alongside a new ChatGPT grocery-shopping route. The Safeway experience can turn recipes, photos, lists, or plain-language meal requests into a cart, but customers complete payment on Safeway’s site. Albertsons plans to bring the feature to six additional grocery banners; its 2,200-plus stores and 36 million weekly customers describe the company’s reach, not adoption of the ChatGPT tool.

Safeway shoppers can now start with a dinner idea in ChatGPT rather than a list of individual products. A new shopping experience surfaces groceries and savings, helps assemble a cart, then sends customers to Safeway to pay. OpenAI introduced the experience on October 1 as part of an expanded partnership with Albertsons Companies covering both customer shopping and work inside the retailer.
The agreement links a consumer-facing shopping tool with a broader effort to use AI across retail technology and business teams. Albertsons operates more than 2,200 stores and serves over 36 million customers each week, according to OpenAI. Those figures describe the retailer’s footprint, not the number of people using the new ChatGPT experience.
A meal request becomes a shopping cart
The Safeway experience accepts a recipe, photo, digital list or plain-language request. OpenAI’s examples cover different kinds of shopping: planning pizza night for four, putting together a quick deli dinner, or restocking breakfast foods and snacks using store brands. The starting point can be a household need, rather than a search for one named item.
That gives the assistant a role in translating a meal idea into things to buy.
Jill Pavlovich, Albertsons’ senior vice president of digital customer experience, described the feature as a way to reduce friction in everyday shopping. The company says it builds on Albertsons’ existing AI shopping assistant and Ask AI capabilities. It is an additional route into grocery shopping, not the retailer’s first use of AI to help customers.
The partnership also reaches merchants and employees
Behind the shopping feature, Albertsons is expanding AI use in selected parts of its organization. ChatGPT Enterprise and OpenAI-powered applications are being used by teams building retail technology and by business functions. The stated goals include streamlining work, supporting decisions and identifying practices that could be repeated more widely.
The internal approach starts with focused areas so Albertsons can evaluate what works before extending it.
Merchandising is another part of the partnership. Albertsons says it combines predictive models, which make forecasts, with generative AI to produce recommendations and promotional insights. The aim is to help merchants weigh business considerations while making the recommendations explainable. Those tools address which products to promote and how to explain a recommendation, separate from the shopper’s cart-building conversation.
