A stack, not a single model

The agreement spans the computing layer and the software layer. Portfolio companies can use Gemini Enterprise, Google Cloud’s AI Hypercomputer, custom TPU accelerators, NVIDIA GPUs, Vertex AI, and Google’s data analytics and storage systems. They can also access open-source and third-party models through Vertex AI, rather than being limited to Gemini models.

What Clearlake is putting within reach

The Google relationship follows Clearlake’s earlier-August arrangement with OpenAI, which covered more than 50 portfolio companies. Clearlake’s OpenAI toolkit includes GPT-5.6, ChatGPT Work, ChatGPT Enterprise, Codex and Codex CLI, with its in-house Clearlake AI Labs team helping management teams assess use cases, decide whether to build or buy tools, and carry selected projects into products, operations and customer-facing work.

The two arrangements give Clearlake companies a choice of proprietary-model and cloud ecosystems, while the Google deal also exposes them to open-source and third-party models via Vertex AI. That could make model selection part of the operating decision, not a permanent commitment to one provider. Clearlake’s scale raises the stakes: the firm says it has $185 billion in assets across private equity, credit, infrastructure, secondaries, co-investments and related private-market strategies.

The test is deployment, not access

Clearlake says portfolio companies including Alteryx are already using Google technology for business-critical applications. But the announced Google program does not provide a rollout timetable, company-by-company deployment list, or performance metrics. Its stated goal is scalable, production-grade AI capability across each company’s operating model; whether the expanded toolkit produces that outcome remains the central execution question.
