The U.S. Department of Energy has closed a loan of up to $1.9 billion to help NextEra Energy restart Iowa’s Duane Arnold Energy Center. Pending required Nuclear Regulatory Commission licensing approvals, the project would return 615 megawatts of nuclear generation to the grid. NextEra expects the plant to restart in 2029.
Duane Arnold stopped operating in 2020. TechCrunch reported that an intense rainstorm damaged the plant, and NextEra mothballed it rather than repair it. Cheap natural gas had made nuclear power economically unattractive at the time, TechCrunch reported. The DOE financing is intended to support the refurbishment and restart of the Linn County facility.
The Duane Arnold closing is part of a federal effort to revive existing reactors. DOE said its financing office had financed three nuclear-plant restarts with this closing. TechCrunch reported that the Three Mile Island reactor is scheduled to generate 835 megawatts, compared with Duane Arnold’s planned 615 megawatts. Refurbishment is expected to add 14 megawatts to Duane Arnold’s output.
Google is reportedly considering building up to six data centers near Duane Arnold. Separately, NextEra CEO John Ketchum said 50 megawatts would be set aside for the local power cooperative. TechCrunch identified rising AI-related electricity demand and wider electrification as forces renewing interest in shuttered nuclear plants. The data-center plans remain unconfirmed, but the reported local allocation makes the eventual use of revived capacity consequential.
The loan changes Duane Arnold’s funding position, not its operating status. Required NRC licensing approvals remain a major condition for the restart. DOE Deputy Secretary James Danly said the project would lower electricity costs and support thousands of jobs, but those are projected outcomes rather than results already delivered.
