The Federal Laboratory Consortium has selected AI-GUIDE, a handheld device developed by MIT Lincoln Laboratory and Massachusetts General Hospital, for its 2026 Excellence in Technology Transfer Award. The recognition arrives as the partners transfer the prototype to AutonomUS Medical Technologies for commercialization, aiming to take AI-assisted vascular access beyond the hospital.
A bedside procedure shrunk for the field
AI-GUIDE pairs custom AI software with commercial handheld ultrasound. Its purpose is to help a user guide a wire and catheter into a patient’s blood vessel, a process known as vascular access. The device is designed for pre-hospital settings, where the conventional ultrasound equipment available in hospitals may not be practical.
That setting defines the project’s stakes. The developers say military medics may need to keep injured soldiers alive in the field for extended periods before evacuation. AI-GUIDE is intended to let medics with limited specialized training perform interventions that otherwise could not be done outside a hospital.
The transfer is the news, not a deployment result
The award recognizes the process of moving a federally developed technology toward real-world use. According to Lincoln Laboratory, the project went from a Combat Casualty Care Research Program proposal to a working proof of concept and startup company within three years. Clinical testing at Massachusetts General Hospital established the prototype’s viability, the laboratory says.
AutonomUS has also secured a Small Business Innovation Research grant from the U.S. Department of the Air Force and funding from private investors, the Department of War, and the National Institutes of Health. Those steps give the company resources and a regulatory route, but the announced transition remains a commercialization effort rather than evidence of broad field deployment.
A platform with further clinical ambitions
The team is continuing to develop and transition additional capabilities under AI-GUIDE, including peripheral nerve block technology for trauma care and pain management. For now, the clearest measure of the award’s practical significance will be whether the startup can carry the vascular-access prototype through commercialization and make the system available where its portability is meant to matter most.
