The four-year initiative targets 500,000 women, but its design acknowledges that decision support will depend on phones, data access and stronger clinic connectivity.

The Gates Foundation and MTN Group Foundation are committing about $25 million through 2030 to deploy the Nigeria Maternal Health Multiplier, a public-health program combining AI decision support, phones, devices, mobile data, and facility connectivity. It targets 500,000 women, 5,000 frontline workers, and 500 health facilities. The strategy treats access infrastructure as essential to clinical AI adoption, while integration with Nigeria’s existing government initiative may improve reach.
The four-year program runs from 2026 to 2030 and uses direct and in-kind funding from both foundations.
MTN contributes connectivity, device distribution, mobile financial services, and local execution; Gates brings maternal-health and responsible-AI expertise.
The platform is built on the Federal Ministry of Health’s existing Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative.
The Gates Foundation and MTN Group Foundation have launched the Nigeria Maternal Health Multiplier, promising AI-enabled support for mothers and frontline workers. But the initiative’s own design makes clear that the software is only one part of the wager: reaching women will also require affordable phones, mobile data and more reliable connections at health facilities.
The four-year partnership, running from 2026 through 2030, includes about $25 million in direct and in-kind funding split between the two organizations. Its stated goal is to help 500,000 women access better maternal care by 2030, while equipping 5,000 frontline health workers to identify pregnancy and childbirth complications earlier.
The platform combines AI- and phone-based decision support for health workers and mothers with device access and facility connectivity. It also plans to connect 500 health facilities to more consistent care standards. That is a broader deployment package than a standalone clinical tool: a mother or worker needs a way to receive and use the guidance, while facilities need the connection to apply it consistently.

MTN’s contribution is its connectivity infrastructure, device-distribution networks, mobile financial services and local market execution experience. The Gates Foundation brings work in maternal and child health, digital health innovation and what it describes as responsible AI. The division of labor puts telecom distribution beside health-program expertise, rather than treating AI as a service that can simply be dropped into clinics.
The program is being built on Nigeria’s existing Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative, which is operated by the Federal Ministry of Health under its Sector-Wide Approach. That connection matters because the announced platform is intended to work through an existing public-health effort, not replace it with a separate digital channel.
The announced figures are goals for the partnership, not reported results. The organizations also say they expect the initial investment to attract additional funding and support expansion into other African markets over time. For now, the concrete test is narrower: whether the package of decision support, devices, data and connected facilities can reach the intended users and help workers spot complications earlier.
