Google’s Android Drop Brings Gemini Item Memory, but Its Five Features Ship on Different Clocks

Google’s September Android Drop packages five everyday features together, but access is sharply split. Gemini-powered remembered locations require Android 16 or newer, Motion Assist is for Android 17 phones, and Guided vision remains marked as coming soon; the Google Messages additions are available now or beginning rollout today.

The most AI-specific addition lets a person tell Gemini where they placed an untagged item, such as a passport or spare key, and optionally attach a photo. Gemini saves that location in Find Hub. A user can later ask Gemini for the location or open Find Hub’s remembered-items tab.

That makes the feature a record of where someone says they stored an object, rather than a way to detect its current location. Google says remembered items are coming soon on Android 16 or newer devices in countries where both Gemini and Find Hub are supported.

Motion Assist tackles phone use in a moving vehicle. It adds a subtle bubble overlay that moves with the ride and is designed to help reduce motion sickness by narrowing the mismatch between what a passenger sees and feels. Android 17 users can turn it on automatically, add it to Quick Settings, and change the bubbles’ shape, color and opacity.

Guided vision uses camera sharing in Gemini Live to describe what is in front of a user. Voice feedback can instruct someone to reframe the camera, pan across a space, or center an object. Google says it designed the feature with and for blind and low-vision communities, citing fine print, restaurant menus and household objects as intended uses.

The stated device range is broader than the other new AI features: Guided vision is coming soon to Android 9 or newer phones where Gemini is available. Google offers Accessibility shortcuts, the TalkBack menu and Gemini App Settings as entry points for the feature.

The changes already reaching Messages

• Chat themes are available now, letting users set a different background, personal photo and color treatment for each conversation.
• Google Keep notes and lists are beginning to roll out inside chats. Participants can view, edit and add to shared notes without leaving the conversation.

The release combines communication features that are already reaching users with AI tools that remain conditional on software versions, regional Gemini support, or both. For people looking specifically for item memory or Guided vision, Google has set eligibility conditions but not a release date beyond “coming soon.”
