Businesses Turn ‘No AI’ Signs Into Ads, With Some Drawing Tens of Thousands of Likes

A small set of businesses and organizations is making an anti-AI pledge part of the advertisement itself. Bars, libraries, cafes and a hair stylist have posted handwritten signs saying they will not use AI-generated posters or content, while still promoting jobs, events, food and services.

The format is a response to a different kind of local promotion. 404 Media previously called the widespread use of AI-generated posters by businesses including surf-lesson coaches, guitar stores, bars and takeout places the “ChatGPT flyer pandemic.” That label, and the view that many of the posters look alike, are 404 Media’s framing. The new signs use paper, pencil, cardboard or marker, making the refusal visible in the promotional material itself.

The message is attached to ordinary business needs

• A bar showed people holding clipboards; one handwritten note said it would not use AI posts to promote forthcoming material, while other images sought applicants for job vacancies.
• A library put a message saying it would not use AI to create content on cardboard.
• A cafe said it would use paper and marker pen instead of AI posters, then used another image to promote its pancakes.
• A stylist paired a handwritten reference to people disliking AI flyers with a drawing of one person working on another’s hair.

Reach is visible; durability is not

Some of these posts have received tens of thousands of likes, according to 404 Media. Rachel Karten, who writes the Link In Bio newsletter, has also shared further examples of the format on social media.

That is engagement reported for individual posts, not a trend-wide measure of local-business marketing. 404 Media expects the anti-AI sign format to lose momentum quickly. For now, its appeal lies in the contrast: a low-fi sign that advertises both a business and the choice not to use generative AI.
