OpenAI is positioning Astra for Law as infrastructure for legal AI, not just a standalone chatbot. Built on GPT-6 Astra with an index of U.S. legal materials and specialized legal instructions, it will initially reach only selected law firms under confidentiality protections. Harvey and Legora are expected to build products on the platform, while integrations with Relativity, Clio, Intapp and Thomson Reuters remain planned.

Harvey and Legora can build legal products on the platform; their eventual availability is not specified.
OpenAI has launched Astra for Law, a platform designed for legal research, drafting advice and custom applications. Its promise is broad, but the first deployment is narrower: selected law firms will receive access through a program OpenAI says includes protections for confidential client work.
The product is based on GPT-6 Astra, but OpenAI has paired the model with an index of U.S. case law, statutes, regulations and other legal materials. It also includes specialized instructions for legal analysis and writing, giving the platform a legal-specific layer rather than presenting the general model alone.
OpenAI says that combination is meant to support research and drafting advice, as well as the development of custom applications for lawyers. Those are intended uses, not independently verified performance results.
OpenAI said Astra for Law is expected to integrate with software from Relativity, Clio, Intapp and Thomson Reuters. Those integrations have been announced as planned connections, rather than demonstrated as live products. The company also said Harvey and Legora will be able to build on the platform.
OpenAI said it worked with Sullivan & Cromwell, Ropes & Gray, Cooley, Latham & Watkins and Wachtell Lipton to test and develop legal AI applications. That gives the launch named design partners, while leaving the eventual reach of the initial firm program unclear.
Astra for Law brings legal source material, law-firm access and a proposed provider ecosystem under one OpenAI product. For now, its clearest concrete boundary is the selected-firm rollout; its broader software network remains a plan to be carried out.
Editorial analysis
The notable part of Astra for Law is not simply that OpenAI has tailored a model for lawyers. It is trying to sit beneath legal workflows already served by specialist vendors and established software providers. The launch offers a defined opening path for selected firms, but the broader platform proposition still depends on providers building products and planned integrations becoming available. The next meaningful signal will be whether those connections move beyond an announced ecosystem into tools lawyers can use in confidential client work.
