RelativityOne Connects Microsoft Copilot to Legal Administration Through MCP

Relativity has connected RelativityOne to Microsoft Copilot through the Model Context Protocol, giving legal teams a natural-language route into selected administrative work without leaving Microsoft 365. The practical change is not a general legal assistant: it is a new interface for setting up and managing the systems around a legal matter.

The connector is a route into platform operations

MCP is the connection RelativityOne now uses to work with Copilot. Relativity says the integration lets users express administrative requests in plain language and execute them in the RelativityOne environment, rather than moving between separate platforms to complete the work.

That scope matters. The company is positioning Copilot as a control surface for legal operations, not as the place where every kind of legal AI work happens. Relativity President Chris Brown said administrative activity can move into Microsoft 365, while the company’s aiR product continues to handle high-stakes legal work that requires deep context; he also said governance remains in RelativityOne.

What users can do today

• In Copilot Cowork, users can stand up workspaces, organize case data, and manage legal operations through natural-language requests.
• In Copilot Chat, users can analyze workspace access and generate administrative reports.
• Relativity plans to add orchestration capabilities to Copilot Chat later in 2026. That feature is planned, rather than part of the current Chat capability set.

Two Copilot experiences, different jobs

The split between Cowork and Chat defines the initial operating boundary. Workspace creation, case-data organization, and legal-operations management are available in Cowork. Chat is currently limited to examining who can access a workspace and producing administrative reports; its planned expansion would bring orchestration into that second interface.

Relativity also says the connection can provide insights into data and usage patterns. The company frames those insights as a way to reinforce best practices, strengthen governance, and support decisions across matters, clients, and practice groups. Those are the company’s intended operational benefits, not independently measured results from the integration.

A distribution choice aimed at existing habits

Relativity is extending a platform it says has long supported APIs and partner integrations into a workplace assistant that legal professionals already use. The company cited the International Legal Technology Association’s 2025 survey, which found Microsoft Copilot in use at 68% of global law firms and 84% of the largest firms.

For legal teams, the near-term test is narrower than the promise of conversational AI: whether natural-language administration reliably reduces the effort of creating workspaces, arranging case data, checking access, and producing reports. Relativity has defined what is live, and it has also defined a material limit: Chat-based orchestration still awaits its planned later-2026 release.
