President Donald Trump has posted AI-generated images and video placing himself beside George Washington in a depiction of a planned White House ballroom, and separately alongside Generals George Patton and Douglas MacArthur on a battlefield. The images bring historical figures into the president’s own Truth Social feed.
The Guardian placed the posts amid pressure on Trump over efforts to reach a deal with Tehran, reports of poor living conditions and morale aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, and approval ratings it described as the lowest of his second term.
An imagined presidential past
Trump posted multiple images of himself and Washington inside what appears to be the planned ballroom. Other posts showed the pair at a table, holding quills over what appears to be a map, and riding on horseback. In the horseback image, Washington rides a white horse and Trump a black horse. In a video, they walk through the ballroom and take turns pointing toward its ceiling as if inspecting the construction.
Trump has called the ballroom a legacy project and repeatedly returned to it during his second term. The posts do not state why he chose Washington for the scenes.
Angelo Carusone, president and CEO of Media Matters, interpreted the imagery as an attempt to portray Trump as on par with, or potentially better than, Washington. Carusone said AI gives Trump a way to project that imagined status into the world; that is his interpretation, not an explanation offered by Trump or the White House.
A second tableau turns military
The military-themed image shows Trump in uniform beside Patton and MacArthur on a battlefield. Tanks appear to burn behind them, while Trump has six rows of medals—more than the image shows Patton and MacArthur wearing combined.
The White House answers for the platform
Asked whether Trump believed he had met Washington, the White House did not directly answer. A spokesperson instead called Truth Social Trump’s authentic, direct channel for communicating with Americans and the world without media distortion.
