Story brief
3 key pointsTrump’s Truth Social posts depicted Kharg Island’s oil infrastructure being destroyed, but the public military record available at publication only confirmed a U.S. operation on nearby Larak Island. Central Command said the real action targeted IRGC minelaying forces posing an imminent Strait of Hormuz threat; NDTV reported rocket launchers were hit. Because Kharg handled 90% of Iran’s oil exports before the war, the AI-generated footage implied a far more economically consequential escalation.

No U.S. strike on Kharg had been reported when NDTV published its account.
Donald Trump’s latest Truth Social posts created a stark split between the war shown online and the military action publicly described: NDTV reported that he shared two AI-generated videos portraying U.S. strikes on Iran, including imagery of Kharg Island, while no U.S. strike on Kharg had been reported when the article was published. The distinction carries weight because Kharg is a critical Iranian oil-export hub.
The posts arrived hours after a real U.S. air operation on Larak Island, a small island in the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. Central Command said that action targeted Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps minelaying forces that posed an imminent threat in the waterway. NDTV said the operation struck Iranian rocket launchers on Larak.
The real target and the simulated one
One of the videos appeared to show an aircraft above explosions at an oil storage tank and an oil tanker on Kharg. Trump’s accompanying text said the island was “being blown to smithereens.” Yet the operation described by Central Command concerned forces in the Strait of Hormuz, not an attack on Kharg’s oil facilities.
Why the location changes the meaning
Kharg is not an interchangeable backdrop. The island handled 90% of Iran’s oil exports before the war began, according to NDTV, and serves as a vital Iranian energy and oil-export hub. An actual attack there could disrupt Iran’s energy trade and exert major economic pressure on Tehran.
That makes the choice of setting consequential. The video does not merely dramatize a confirmed strike; it depicts destruction at a location whose oil infrastructure has a distinct strategic role. For viewers encountering the post without the accompanying operational context, it can suggest that the United States had taken a more economically escalatory step than the Larak operation described by Central Command.
A public record still anchored to Larak
The immediate factual constraint is time-bound but clear: as of NDTV’s publication, there was no report of a U.S. strike on Kharg. Central Command’s stated rationale for the confirmed action was an imminent minelaying threat in the Strait of Hormuz. The posts therefore leave a basic question for anyone assessing the conflict: whether an official account, rather than a generated visual, supports the claim that Kharg was struck.
