Story brief
3 key pointsAmazon is testing Alexa+ in India as an action-oriented assistant rather than a simple Hindi voice interface. It can maintain context, handle multi-step tasks, switch between Hindi and English mid-sentence, and connect to local services such as Swiggy, District, MakeMyTrip, and JioSaavn. Alexa launched in India in English in 2017 and added Hindi in 2019; Alexa+ extends that existing footprint.
Amazon has opened Early Access to Alexa+ in India, promising a more conversational assistant that can retain context, complete multi-step requests and move between Hindi and English within the same sentence. The practical test is whether those language features and local service connections make Alexa+ useful beyond a smarter voice command interface.
A local layer on a familiar assistant
Alexa+ is available to customers in India during the testing period in Hindi and English. Amazon says users can switch languages mid-sentence, a feature aimed at conversations that do not stay entirely in one language.
The assistant is designed to hold longer conversations while maintaining context, Amazon says. It also has a more expressive voice and can carry out multi-step requests, including ordering groceries through Amazon Now and controlling smart-home devices.
From a request to a service
Amazon is not presenting the India rollout as a language update alone. Alexa+ is connected to India-based services spanning food delivery, ticket booking, travel, restaurant reservations and music. That gives the assistant a path from a spoken request to actions or information inside services people already use.
Services Amazon says Alexa+ can connect with
- Food delivery: Swiggy.
- Tickets and reservations: Zomato’s District and EazyDiner.
- Travel and music: TripAdvisor, MakeMyTrip, Amazon Music and JioSaavn.
An upgrade, not Alexa’s first Hindi launch
Amazon introduced Alexa in India in English in 2017 and added Hindi support in 2019. Alexa+ therefore builds on an existing local presence, rather than marking the assistant’s debut in the country.
Amazon says its smart-home devices in India grew 20% year over year, though it did not provide absolute sales or device figures. That leaves the size of the addressable installed base unclear, even as the company adds an assistant intended to do more with connected devices and services.
The remaining question is whether the interaction model holds up once it meets everyday requests that cross languages, services and multiple steps. Early Access offers Amazon a period to test that promise before the product becomes a Prime benefit and a paid subscription for everyone else.
