Google Adds AI Shopping Tools That Move Retailers Closer to the Sale

Retailers using Google now have a more direct route from an AI-assisted product search to a purchase: they can measure visibility in Google’s AI results, test shopper conversations inside YouTube ads and add new checkout controls. Google packaged those changes in a holiday-season agentic-commerce update, extending the role of its retail tools beyond listings and ad placements.

The most broadly available piece is AI performance insights in Merchant Center, now generally available in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand and the U.S. The tool lets merchants compare the visibility of their brands and products with other brands across surfaces including AI Mode and AI Overviews. That gives retailers a new reporting layer for a shopping journey that may begin with a conversational answer instead of a conventional search-results page.

A chat without leaving the video

Google is also inviting eligible U.S. retailers into a Business Agent beta for YouTube ads. Once enrolled, a retailer can embed the agent in an ad, allowing viewers to research products, ask complex questions and receive tailored guidance while remaining in YouTube. The format puts product assistance directly inside a paid placement rather than requiring the shopper to click through before asking for help.

Checkout gains a handoff

On the transaction side, Google expanded the Merchant Center hub for Universal Commerce Protocol-powered checkout. Merchants using the hub can enable cart transfer to their own sites and enhanced checkout-flow testing. Google says the protocol already supports direct checkout for hundreds of thousands of brands and retailers across its services; the new hub capabilities are rolling out gradually in the U.S., with Australia and Canada planned for early next year.

The protocol’s earlier capabilities help explain the handoff. It supports optional cart, catalog and identity-linking functions; identity linking can let logged-in shoppers receive retailer benefits such as member pricing or free shipping. Google cites Tapestry, owner of Coach and Kate Spade, as a retailer that has integrated UCP-powered checkout to sell through Search, including AI Mode, and the Gemini app.

The product feed becomes more conversational

Google’s update also asks retailers to treat product feeds as inputs to conversational shopping. Merchants can submit conversational attributes that add context to product listings, and can connect loyalty data so member perks and pricing appear in Google results. Google said that, in testing with lululemon, the brand’s submitted conversational attributes appeared in 50% of relevant AI Mode product recommendations.

What merchants can now use or test

• AI visibility comparisons in Merchant Center across five markets.
• A U.S. beta for answering shopper questions inside YouTube ads.
• Cart transfer and checkout testing through the UCP integration hub.
• Conversational product details and loyalty information in listings.

Google’s own figures should be read as company-supplied results, not a guarantee for every merchant. It says retailers following core Merchant Center feed practices see an average 5% conversion increase in the following month. The key near-term question is whether retailers can turn these connected tools into a coherent customer experience while the YouTube agent remains a beta and the new checkout capabilities reach markets on different schedules.
