The United States had about 3,000 operating data centers and another 1,500 in development, according to an April Pew Research Center analysis cited by The Verge. New York and Texas have begun slowing new buildouts over grid-capacity concerns and the risk that residents would bear costs if technology companies alter their plans.

For communities considering AI infrastructure, Loudoun offers neither a simple warning nor a turnkey model. Its record establishes the potential public return from a concentrated commercial base. The unresolved question is whether prospective hosts can decide how to handle noise, transmission infrastructure and other local effects before their own buildouts become difficult to redirect.
