Twitch has given streamers a way to block Amazon from using their posts, streams, and videos to train its AI models. But the Generative AI Training setting is enabled by default, placing the burden on creators to find and change it. Twitch product chief Mike Minton said an opt-in design was not viable because otherwise “no one would participate.”
The control is a privacy toggle, not a blanket restriction
The mechanism is straightforward. On the Twitch website or mobile app, a creator opens their account avatar, selects Settings, then Security and Privacy, and turns off the Generative AI Training option. That setting governs whether channel content can be used to help train Amazon’s AI models.
How to change the setting

The practical limitation sits beside the switch. Twitch says disabling it “does not prevent Twitch and Amazon from using your channel’s content for other purposes described in Twitch’s Privacy Notice.” Those purposes include AI-powered tools for sponsorship assistance, viewer recommendations, and community safety through systems such as AutoMod.

A setting change exposes a consent problem
Minton’s comment makes the default consequential: Twitch chose broad initial participation and offered creators an exit, rather than asking for advance permission. More than 16,000 creators in a forum dedicated to the change opposed having their content used by default for Amazon AI training after the setting was announced.
The dispute is not simply about whether Twitch can work with creator material. Its Terms of Service, effective since March 2024, grant Twitch and its sublicensees broad rights to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, distribute, and create derivative works from user content. The terms had not explicitly said that material could train generative AI models.
The history remains unclear
The update does not settle when Twitch began using creator posts, streams, and videos to train Amazon systems. Mary Kish, Twitch’s head of community, introduced the change during a livestream, but the timing and extent of earlier training use remain unresolved.
Minton also said it was reasonable to assume that much publicly available content is used to train models in some form, while acknowledging he did not know for certain. That is a warning about the broader web-data environment, not evidence that other companies have trained on Twitch material. For Twitch creators, the immediate decision is narrower: whether to leave Amazon’s training permission switched on.
