Today's briefing
What matters today
Today, AI tools reached further into the internet’s working surfaces: Apple Messages, streaming metadata, paid ads, and locally downloadable weights. Across the issue, the operative questions are who controls the permissions, labels, reviews, and safeguards around them.

Lead story / platform shift
ChatGPT Can Now Send Apple Messages. Its Mac Permissions Set the Terms.
OpenAI rolled out an Apple Messages integration for ChatGPT on Mac that can read, search, and summarize conversations, then draft replies, send texts, or delete messages. The feature launched August 20 and also works with Codex and ChatGPT Work, moving the assistant from a separate drafting window into ongoing message threads. The setup boundary is unusually broad. Users must authorize access in both ChatGPT and macOS, including Full Disk Access, contacts, automation tools, and on-device message history; OpenAI says it uses AppleScript and Accessibility to operate Messages. The integration combines retrieval with action. It can help find and analyze a past exchange, but it can also communicate as the user or delete messages, making the permission choices and send controls central to the product rather than incidental setup. OpenAI says the plug-in runs locally on the Mac and does not create an index of all messages, though its public description does not fully explain how local processing works operationally. Its clearest stated safeguard is per-send approval: OpenAI discourages persistent approval because it removes the user’s final review before a message goes out.

Greater Manchester Tests the NHS’s Palantir Alternative
Greater Manchester continues using its locally built Analytics and Data Science Platform rather than Palantir’s FDP, even as 35 of England’s 36 integrated care boards actively use FDP. The government has six months to decide whether to trigger a break clause in the NHS contract worth more than $400 million.

Anthropic’s Meeting Workflow Points Beyond Summaries
Claude Desktop artifacts outline Parka, an unreleased system for recording meetings and turning follow-ups into Cowork, Code, or manual tasks. Public macOS and Windows builds showed no usable interface, leaving its release, branding, and automatic execution unresolved.

One School Makes AI Permission Assignment-Specific
Washington Leadership Academy uses a zero-to-four rubric that sets permitted AI use for each assignment, alongside instruction in prompting, output evaluation, and tool selection. A Stanford review of 14 studies found mixed results, with gains often disappearing once AI access was removed.

Robot Training Data, Collected Without Robots
Simple AI released HiFi-UMI-2K under CC BY 4.0, with more than 482,000 human-captured bimanual demonstrations across over 110 scenes. In its tests, robot-free training approached teleoperation results but used more than 10 times as many demonstrations.
